We can propose you two ways to get from airport Boryspil to Vinnitsa. The most convenient and quick way to overcome it - is by taxi. It takes 3 hours. One more way to get Vinnitsa is by train (Ukrainian Railways at http://www.uz.gov.ua/index_eng.html. The railway station is located in the centre of Kiev, about 30km from airport. Prices for tickets are higher for foreigners, and the rate usually includes a per-ticket commission. The whole way to Vinnitsa from airport Boryspil takes about 4 hours. So there are two options and it is up to you to decide which one to use. Top
The Vinnitsa province
lies
to the west of Kiev, about 250 km from Ukraine's capital.
The city Vinnitsa is called a pearl of Podillya and it
is really so. Situated on the legendary banks of the Southern
Buh it impresses everybody by the organic link between
town civilization and picturesque nature. For present about
380 000 people live in Vinnitsa. The city is over 600 years
old. Its history has known its ups and downs. Modern Vinnitsa
is an important industrial, economic and cultural center
of Ukraine. The peculiarities of the city development,
the outstanding historical events have found their reflection
in its architecture. Respect and care of the past and the
rebirth of the national traditions of the town have become
very typical of late. They have proved conducive to the
revival of the town's spiritual life. Today all the churches
that were built in the past, namely: the Holy Virgin Maria
Anhel'ska Temple, Sv'ato-Preobrzhensky Cathedral and others
are open. Besides new churches of different religious confessions
are being built now
Vinnitsa
is known by its talents and there are some sights are
worth of visiting in Vinnitsa. The Estate Museum of M.I.Pyrogov
1810-1881) - the world-known surgeon, who invented narcosis,
plaster cast and many other things. Every day many tourists
from Ukrainian towns and villages and from abroad come
to this estate- museum on excursions. They can look at
the rooms where the professor wrote his scientific works,
examined patients, rested, listened to music played by
P. Tchaikovsky. You will surely get much pleasure walking
in the park that surrounds the house. Near to the museum
a Saint Mykolai Church is located. This Church is considered
to be unique, because one of three world's mausoleums
is located on its territory- the mausoleum of M.I.Pyrogov.
There is one more place in our town which is known all
over the world - The Hitler Headquarter. During the Great
Patriotic War many soldiers and officers that were captured,
were picked out and taken to Vinnitsa to build a huge
underground structure for Hitler and his staff. Many
thousands people were shot after the headquarters was
built. All the entrances were concreted, mined and hidden.
At the end of the World War 2 this place was heavily
bombarded and till now nobody knows exactly what is inside
of it.
We
advise you to visit the Estate open-aired Museum of M.Kotsyubinsky.
You will see the house where a famous Ukrainian literature
was born and lived. You will be surprised how this picturesque
village landscape saves its naturalness in a very bottom
of the industrial city. The theatrical life of Vinnitsa
is flourishing now. M.Sadovsky Ukrainian Drama theater,
the Puppet theatre, the Regional Philarmonic Society
are always opened to their spectators. Vinnitsa has recently
been decorated not only with the monumental sculpture
compositions, but also with small plin air sandstone
sculptures. As time goes on more and more buildings of
modern European design are being built. Visit this town
and see how beautiful it is and what kind people live
there! Top
Language
Ukrainian is the official language of Ukraine, but all
citizens understand and speak Russian. It is not often
you can meet people who can speak English. So it is
an advantage if have an English - Russian phrase-book
or learn some more frequently used phrases in Russian
or Ukrainian.
Money
Hryvnya is the only legal tender of Ukraine. US dollars,
Euros and German marks can be exchanged at exchange
points in the airport and around Vinnitsa. However,
large amounts of money should not be revealed when
exchanging currency. Foreign currency bills should
be crisp and appear to be in new or good condition.
Rumpled, torn, written-on bills are generally not accepted.
Changing money with private individuals should be avoided.
ATM machines are widely available to withdraw local
money with credit cards. A few western-style shops
and some hotels accept major credit cards. However,
do not rely solely on credit cards or travellers checks.
Cash is preferred.
Electricity in Ukraine
Electricity in Ukraine is 220volts, 50 Hz AC. You will
need a European plug adapter (with round pins) plug
into electric sockets. Adapter kits can be purchased
at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and luggage stores. American electrical
appliances will also require a "step-down" converter,
that
"steps" the electricity down from 220v to 110v.
Time
The time in Ukraine is set two hours ahead of the Greenwich
meantime GMT. To save electric power, it is altered
twice a year. The watches are set one hour forward
in the last week of March and one hour backward in
the last week of October. For exact time information,
dial 052 within Ukraine. Top
Stores:
State-owned and private stores in Vinnitsa are generally divided into grocery
stores, department stores and supermarkets which offer a variety of domestic
and imported products. Stores are open on Saturdays until 18:00 and are closed
only on Sundays. The majority of stores have a lunch hour, during which stores
are closed. This is usually from 13:00-14:00 or from 14:00-15:00.
Markets
The bustling farmer market (Bazaar) is the best place to buy fruits, vegetables,
meat, cheese, eggs, and flowers. Remember that the metric system is used
in Ukraine. Top
Post offices:
Post offices are located all around Vinnitsa. The Central Post Office is at
Sobornaya street. Stamps and post cards may be purchased, fax machines and
Internet may be used, and international phone calls can be made.
Phones:
For calls within Vinnitsa, public telephones are located throughout the city
and require phone cards. These cards may also be purchased at every post
office. Long distance phone services in Ukraine are operated by Utel (Ukrainian
Telecommunications).
The rate for calls to Europe are about €0.60-1.50 per minute. Calls to the
United States are about €2.50 per minute. Top
Taxis:
Taxis can be ordered by dialing 001, 055, 000.
However, private cars and taxis swarm the city streets, so getting a ride is
not a problem. To hail a car, simply put out your hand to flag down a ride,
and a car will stop. Private cars (locals who have cars and on occasion act
as a taxi) cost significantly less than taxis. Prices of Taxi services are
fluctuating from €0,56-3, depends on distance. Be wary of getting into a private
car with more than one person already inside.
Trolleys, Trams and Buses:
These tend to be crammed tight with people but provide a good and cheap way
to travel around the city. You can purchase tickets at a price of 40 kopecks
from a controller on the trolley or bus. If you do not punch your ticket
and are caught, you will be charged a 10 Hryvnia fine. In addition, there
are private minibus companies that serve practically the same routes and
will offer you a faster and a more comfortable ride. The price per ride varies
from 60 kopecks to 1 hryvnia.
Driving:
Most international driving rules apply in Vinnitsa. However, many locals do
not obey the traffic laws. Officially, speed limits are 60 kph/37 mph in
cities, 90 kph/56 mph in un-populated areas, and 120 kph/72 mph on highways.
One should observe lane designations carefully, for it may be necessary to
turn right and make a U-turn in order to turn left. Street names are often
hard to find when driving, since they are posted on the buildings and spelled
in Cyrillic. It may be helpful to translate a map into English before getting
out on the road.
Parking in Vinnitsa:
To insure the safety of one’s car, parking should be in designated areas
only. State-owned parking lots are located all over the city and have varying
prices (depending on the location of the lot). Top

There are a few simple rules of etiquette that should be followed when visiting Ukraine.
- If invited to a family home, it is traditional to bring a gift. A bottle of wine, a cake, or a bouquet of flowers are customary. If there is a child in the house, it is appropriate to bring a gift for them as well.
- If planning on giving flowers as a gift, make sure that the number of flowers in a bouquet is uneven (an even number of flowers is considered bad luck).
- Do not shake hands across the threshold of a door. It is considered bad luck to do so.
- When eating dinner at someone’s home, casual dress is accepted. Also, be prepared to give a toast at dinner, as guests are often asked to do so.

- Be prepared to accept all food and drink offered to you when visiting friends. Ukrainians are known for their generosity when it comes to feeding others. Refusing food may be considered rude.
- Be prepared to take off your shoes upon entering a home. To keep apartments clean, most hosts will provide their guests a pair of slippers.
- Be careful when complimenting a host’s belongings because they may offer it to you.
- If wearing gloves, take them off before shaking hands with someone.
- When using public transportation, seats should be given up to accommodate the elderly, mothers with children, and the handicapped.
- Offer to share snacks and cigarettes with those people around you.
- At the entrance of an upscale restaurant, expect that your coat, briefcase, or baggage will be checked.
- Be sure to have business cards printed in Ukrainian on one side, and in English on the other.
- For business, dress should be conservative. Men should not take off their jackets unless asked to do so.
- In Orthodox and Greek-Catholic churches, women wear scarves or hats, and men take off their hats.
- It is considered a very rude gesture to place one’s thumb between your first and second fingers. Refrain from doing so.
